Oggi sul blog parliamo delle Groupie..

Ovvero, le ragazze che hanno accompagnato i più grandi musicisti nei loro tour condividendo tutto quello che c’era da condividere. Parleremo delle più famose e soprattutto quelle che hanno dedicato la loro vita a seguire il proprio artista o la band.

Con il termine groupie si è iniziato ad identificare, a partire dagli anni sessanta, le ragazze che accompagnavano le rockstar in gran parte delle loro tournée, assecondandone con entusiasmo la vita sregolata e le sfrenatezze sessuali, e divenendo quindi vere e proprie componenti del loro entourage.

Le groupie erano delle fan molto giovani (anche minorenni: la loro età andava dai 14-15 anni in su, solitamente fino ai 20, tranne rare eccezioni che arrivavano ai 25 anni) le quali, oltre ad amare particolarmente la musica di un certo rocker o addirittura di diversi, seguivano gli artisti in questione nei loro tour, irresistibilmente attratte dal loro carisma, diventandone infatuate sostenitrici ed intime amiche. Oltre a questo, le groupie erano ben riconoscibili rispetto alle semplici fan grazie a un look più curato e spesse volte molto sexy, oltre che, nella maggior parte dei casi, a una bella presenza.

Il termine deriva dalla parola group (gruppo musicale), ma attualmente viene usato anche in ambienti differenti, in particolare nello sport, per descrivere le fan degli sportivi che li seguono comunque durante le loro tournée, ma che poco hanno da condividere con le loro "nonne" o contemporanee musicali.

Le groupie divennero presto un fenomeno sociale grazie alla fama che raggiunsero alcune di esse, in particolare Pamela Des Barres (incoronata come la prima vera groupie della storia), Courtney Love, Nancy Spungen, Jenny Fabian, Bebe Buell e Cynthia Plaster Caster. Cynthia, oltre a concedersi alle efferatezze sessuali delle star, ebbe l'insolita intuizione di fare dei calchi in gesso ai loro genitali, i quali divennero presto un fenomeno artistico. Se pur largamente diffuse già dagli anni '70 negli Stati Uniti e nel Nord Europa, in Italia le groupie comparvero solo negli anni '80 se non '90.

In modo miope, le groupie possono essere viste come ragazze disposte a tutto per il loro integralista amore verso una band o un artista; ragazze che poi, quando non impegnate a fare le "reginette dei backstage", svolgono una vita generalmente normale. Alcune persone che si presume essere poco abituate al mondo del rock'n'roll le avevano etichettate come prostitute da tournée; mentre le groupie non sempre, anzi difficilmente, richiedono denaro in cambio di prestazioni sessuali, poiché si concedono ai loro idoli e non ritengono alcuni loro atteggiamenti, pubblicamente visti come promiscui, segno di facili costumi.

Da un punto di vista maschilista, d'altra parte, si potrebbe considerare il fenomeno delle "groupie" come l'estremizzazione di un comportamento o atteggiamento in realtà molto comune, cioè che si esplica pur sempre entro ambiti assai più comuni rispetto al mondo delle rockstar, ma in modi diversi: è ovvio, tuttavia, che così non è.

In realtà quello delle groupies fu un fenomeno piuttosto complesso: erano mosse da motivazioni varie, dalla ricerca di una miscela di successo e di nuovi modi di usare il proprio corpo e pure a fatali attrazioni verso le carismatiche figure rock. Furono infatti protagoniste nella rivoluzione culturale e sessuale dei settanta e riuscirono a portare il nuovo modo di vedere il sesso sulle copertine dei giornali.

A dispetto della loro immagine apparentemente superficiale nella vita delle rock star, non così di rado è successo che delle groupie si siano sposate con le rock star in questione a causa del feeling creatosi durante gli innumerevoli e stressanti tour di queste ultime; può essere preso ad esempio in tal senso quanto è accaduto a BeeGees, Aerosmith,David Bowie (sposatosi con Angie, ragazzina che per due anni seguì i suoi concerti), Eric Clapton (sposatosi invece con Layla, groupie in carriera, per la quale divenne letteralmente pazzo).

È necessario inoltre muovere una distinzione tra groupie e roadie; i roadie sono infatti coloro che, più semplicemente, seguono la band on the road e ne costituiscono l'entourage rendendosi utili (ma che le case discografiche devono necessariamente pagare). E sono anche i migliori amici delle groupie, poiché sono fonte di backstage pass e raccomandazioni.

Sulle groupie sono stati girati diversi film, in particolare Quasi famosi (2000), di Cameron Crowe, che vinse il premio Oscar per la migliore sceneggiatura, e che rappresenta molto bene il crudo e complesso ambiente delle icone del rock.

A groupie is a person who seeks emotional and sexual intimacy with a musician or other celebrity. "Groupie" is derived from group in reference to a musical group, but the word is also used in a more general sense, especially in casual conversation.

Female groupies in particular have a long-standing reputation of being available to celebrities, pop stars, rock stars and other public figures. Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant is quoted as distinguishing between fans who wanted brief sexual encounters, and "groupies" who traveled with musicians for extended periods of time, acting as a surrogate girlfriend or mother, often taking care of the musician's valuables, drugs, wardrobe, and social life. Nancy Spungen, who became the partner of Sid Vicious of The Sex Pistols, is one such example; women adopting this role are sometimes referred to as "road wives." Cynthia Plaster Caster and The GTOs ("Girls Together Outrageously"), with Pamela Des Barres, in particular, as de-facto spokeswoman, are probably the best known groupies of this type.

Another type of groupie were the young teenage girls who dominated the backstage scene in the seventies, sometimes referred to as the "Baby Groupies" by certain musicians. These girls started going backstage when they were fourteen years old and set a precedent at the time.

The best known of this group were Sable Starr, Lori Maddox, and Geraldine Edwards, who was the inspiration for Penny Lane in Almost Famous .

Des Barres, who wrote two books detailing her experiences as a groupie – I'm With The Band (1987) and Take Another Little Piece of My Heart: A Groupie Grows Up (1993) – as well as another non-fiction book, Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon, asserts that a groupie is to a rock band as Mary Magdalene was to Jesus. Her most recent book, Let's Spend the Night Together (2007), is a collection of wildly varied interviews with classic "old school" groupies including Catherine James, Connie Hamzy,Cherry Vanilla, DeeDee Keel, Margaret Moser, and Patti Johnsen as well as modern groupies like Mandy Murders, Lexa Vonn and the Plastics. Des Barres, who married rock star-actor Michael Des Barres, also persuaded cult actress Tura Satana, muse Bebe Buell, actress Patti D'Arbanville, and Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark to talk about their relationships with musicians.

Led Zeppelin and their Groupies

According to Des Barres' book, there is at least one verified male groupie, Pleather, who followed female celebrities such as Courtney Love and members of the 80s pop group The Bangles.

"Apple Scruffs", from George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass, refers to the Apple scruffs, a group of teenage girls who staked out The Beatles' Apple Corps offices, Abbey Road Studios, and Paul McCartney's home, often sleeping outside in rough weather, waiting for a glimpse of a Beatle. The Beatles' song "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" refers to the day a few Scruffs climbed into Paul McCartney's house through an upstairs bathroom window and raided his closet for a pair of trousers, which they took turns wearing. They also took a framed photograph, which they later returned at McCartney's request. The movie Almost Famous revolves around the life of groupies (although they call themselves 'band aids' in the film). The famous "band aid" comment originated from a statement that Bebe Buell made in an interview in the seventies. Cameron Crowe incorporated it into his screenplay. In 1970 Groupie Girl was released by American International Pictures and was written by director Derek Fordand Suzanne Mercer based on Mercer's experiences as a groupie.

Michael Jackson was known to say that his number 1 hit song Dirty Diana was written about a groupie.

According to a new report by Human Rights Watch, violence against LGBT people in South Africa has hit a new high. Worse, it is often completely ignored by police.

The report includes the case of one South African lesbian who was repeatedly raped by a family member, her soccer coach, and her pastor, all in an attempt to "convert" her and show her how to be a "real" woman. 

Her case is just one of many instances of anti-LGBT brutality, including a series of slayings of lesbian women in South African townships.

South Africa's constitution promises equality for all of its citizens, but that promise isn't being kept for LGBT people.
